How To Protect Your Stuff In Storage Units

Storage units can be a convenient solution for storing surplus items, but you may worry about the safety of your items while you're away. Since you won't be able to keep a constant eye on your stuff, here are some tips for making sure it's safe while you're away.

Keep Everything on Pallets

One important thing to do is invest in pallets to keep everything off the floor. This is a good safety measure because it makes sure your stuff won't get damaged by external factors. For instance, if your storage unit is outside, it may be possible for snow to leak in under the door and get your boxes wet, if they're not kept on pallets. You may also have a problem if someone in the adjacent storage unit spills something that soaks into your unit. keeping everything off the floor eliminates this concern.

Wrap Everything

Some storage units can provide you with wrapping materials and packing supplies, and it's a good idea to take advantage of this and wrap as much as you can. If you have a box that you won't access for a longer period of time, wrap the entire box in plastic wrap, so that it won't get dust or bugs inside. Do the same with your larger items such as furniture, to avoid any spills or dust.

This is especially true if you have items that will be sensitive to seasonal temperature changes. You may want to take extra care to wrap these items in insulated boxes, or simply don't store them at all.

Protect the Ground

Another aspect of safety is making sure that your storage unit is safe— you can get charged for any marks or spills in the unit. It can be helpful to put plastic wrapping on the ground under any boxes or items that could be vulnerable to making a mess while you're gone. For instance, group any liquid items into plastic containers or pad the ground below them.

Lock it Up

Security can vary between storage units, which is why it's important to make sure that you have a high quality unit with great reviews. Even so, it can't hurt to add a little security to your unit. Consider adding a thick padlock to the door to provide added security. By taking little steps such as these, you will help to eliminate your concerns about safety in your unit. About Me

too many people in a small space - staying organized

How do you keep a two bedroom house organized when you have five people living in it? Knowing that the living arrangement is only temporary pushed me into finding somewhere away from home to store the things that aren't used often at the time. How do you decide what goes and what stays? I created this blog to help other parents find unique ways to organize their homes when the space is limited and the kids are plentiful. Hopefully, what I have learned will help you get through a difficult time without sacrificing the things that you may one day need.
